Panthers

These are an early draft of the lyrics to Panthers. They’ve changed considerably, obviously, but here they are anyhow.

Panther

I didn’t mean to frighten you
startled like an elk in you eyes
glare from the tailights receding

my meaning quietly assuming
form in the air of the night
the moon never expects you to jump
from it’s great height

it thought it knew you were safe
it thought you knew it was clean
the muddy river is going nowhere
your coat has lost it’s sheen

I would have jumped in to save you
the falls were rushing near
as panthers we were natural
the water, water falling fear
the water, water calling you here

I should go to sleep again
it’s late and all around the forest floor
your shadow creeps up on me
startled, phantom of the river
panther of the river.

I would have jumped in to save you
the falls were rushing near
as panthers we were natural
the water, water falling fear
the water, water calling you her
