I saw you at the Hippodrome
again at Camden Town alone
I know you been across the ocean
cuz you wear that crooked smile
Missionaries, Minnesota
Salamanders, South Dakota
Don’t you wanna stay in a Midwest way?
they’ll make it worth your while
you rode back to town on silver threads
with a pocketful of flattened bread
expectin’ everyone to hold the door
cuz you’re just all that and more
(and maybe you aaaaaarrrrreeee…..)
I think of the Chinese blessing
and of Mother’s mighty lessons
Asking Gypsies for directions
Isn’t that a howl
As you lay glistening in all your splendor
Painted rattlers, turtle shakers
Medicated Buddha-nature
Never show a pulse (to anyone)
Never show a pulse (to anyone)
you rode back to town on silver threads
with a pocketful of flattened bread
expectin’ everyone to hold the door
cuz you’re just all that and more
(and maybe you aaaaaarrrrreeee…..)
